Image Description: a close-up image of of a Gum tree, textured with parts of the bark peeling off. On the left of the image is the text “BIG / NOTERS” in all-capital letters - ‘big’ is black, and ‘noters’ is red.

The term “Big Noters” suggests that a person is too sure themselves or thinks they are better than. This is not the case with this amazing group of Aboriginal musicians, quite the opposite.

Big Noters refers to the music of which we play and perform and in doing so, a few of us have come together to showcase our Big Notes and to share our musical journeys with audiences. Amelia Taylor, Michael Birk, Gii Music headed up by Troy Russell and Tim Gray from Green Hand Band make up the first lineup of many Big Noter Gigs to come. What better place to showcase these amazing Aboriginal Artists than Redfern.

Program

Dean Kelly will be performing a smoking ceremony for us! Dean is a Yuin man, a member of the Botany Bay Aboriginal Community. He is also accepted as belonging to the La Perouse Aboriginal Community, and is a member of the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council.

Amelia (THOM) will be showcasing the contrast in her music making, from soft and sweet acoustic music to produced beats with experimental vocals. We will hear a variety of sounds that show us how music can be so different and yet so similar.

Tim Gray will be performing a very stripped back semi-acoustic style songwriting timeline of songs Tim has written. Starting from 2008 with the song Namatjira Haven which was written in a Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation center, to now having wrote 30 + songs over the years. Tim will choose the songs that represent his growth as a person during his sobriety and life in general.

GiiMusic Gii means heart in the language of the Gamillaroi people. We have chosen “GiiMusic” as the name for our folk band. GiiMusic was founded by Troy Russell and Bree Baxter in 2016. Both have a deep love of folk music and art music and are always looking for fresh and new ways to tell a story. The vocalist is Leila Hamilton hails from Hill End. Troy and Bree met Leila at a series of concerts held in Redfern NSW.  This Saturday the lovely Susie Bishop sits in for Bree And Dan Allen is joining us on guitar.
