THE MECHANICAL FIDDLE - Saturday 4 February 2023

Ensemble Offspring brings together a crack team of Sydney’s finest percussionists with violinist and 2021 Freedman Fellowship winner, Kyla Matsuura-Miller. Together this eclectic ensemble presents Lou Harrison’s iconic Concerto for Violin with Percussion Orchestra, a work which transports the classical violin into the machine-inspired world of junk percussion, and manages to do it with moments of intense beauty.

An equally hypnotic percussion ensemble classic, The Lonely Cowbell by Dutch composer Theo Loevendie, is partnered with works written especially for Ensemble Offspring by Andrew Ford and Eric Avery (Ngiyampaa, Yuin, Bandjalang, and Gumbangirri artist). Finally, Kyla owns the stage with a new solo for violin by Melbourne-based composer Jaslyn Robertson.
