Artists with disability take the stage
This concert creates a platform for artists with disabilty, shifting whose stories are being shared, and celebrating the art and practice of those with disability and the unique contribution we provide to the musical and artistic landscape both in Australia and internationally. We shine a light on the perspective that comes from our lived experience, and through this shift, begin a conversation to dispel the myths and practices which have caused our art and stories to be withheld from audiences.
Access Consultant Morwenna Collett, flautist and Backstage Music director Lamorna Nightingale and composer Georgia Scott, have co-curated a program of art music by composers and performers with disability. The program includes music by Georgia Scott, a new multi-media work by film composer Kristin Rule, and performances by Nat Bartsch and Ria Andriani alongside a new electroacoustic work by Rebecca Bracewell which explores the politics of listening and deafness through the sound potential of hearing aids.
Sunday 4 December 2022, 4-6.30pm
1 hour performance followed by 1 hour panel discussion.
Venue: The Church 9 Mitchell Rd, Alexandria NSW
Tickets : FREE but please register for tickets as numbers are limited.
Access Considerations
Every effort has been make to make this event as accessible as possible for those with various needs. Each of the composers on the program have taken into consideration access requirements and incorporated these needs as much as possible into their creative work. The venue we are working in is an older style building and has limited access but click through to find out what is available. We have created pre-show notes outlining the sounds you will encounter in each of the pieces as well as visual descriptions of the artists. We have also created a Visual Story of how to travel to the venue and get to the accessible entrance from the front of the building. Please let us know your access requirements when you register for your ticket and will try our best to accommodate them. If you have any access questions, please don’t hesitate to email Lamorna at info@backstagemusic.com.au or speak to her by phone on 0402051903.
Audience are strongly encouraged to wear a mask for this event in recognition of the potential vulnerabilities of others in the space.

Limelight Review by Maddy Briggs
“Backstage Music spotlights the works of artists with disability in a program rich with unique practices and fascinating considerations. Moved from the Sydney Opera House to one of the Phoenix Central Park’s venues in Alexandria, Backstage Music’s final concert for the year found a more personal home in a 19th-century gothic church on Mitchell Road. Co-curated by arts accessibility consultant Morwenna Collett, Backstage Music Director Lamorna Nightingale and composer Georgia Scott, Shift was built around works from artists with disability, focusing on their deftly unique approaches to their practice and the challenges in place in a world that makes meagre room for them…. “
